New Zealand: Grant funds dwindle as gamblers spend less

NEW ZEALAND -- As reported by the Bay of Plenty Times: "While gambling support groups celebrate a reduction in spending on the pokies, community groups who benefit from gaming machine proceeds fear a drop in funding at a time when funds are already scarce.

"As the recession bites, gamblers in Tauranga and the Western Bay have trimmed their spending on pokies by more than 5 per cent, almost $2 million, in the year to the end of June.

"Perry Foundation national grants manager Jennifer Palmer said a drop in pokies spending would result in a fall in funding to community organisations..."
