New Mexico Off-Reservation Casino Battle Heats Up

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – As reported by the Las Cruces Sun-News: "Santa Fe businessman Jerry Peters and Jemez Pueblo want the state's first off-reservation Indian casino built in Dona Ana County.

"Stan Fulton, owner of the nearby Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, is vehemently opposed.

"And both sides say they are willing to pony up $40 million if they get their way.

"But the Dona Ana County Commission is not for sale, says Chairman William McCamley.

"…Jemez Pueblo, which wants to build a casino in Anthony, more than 250 miles south of its northern New Mexico reservation, on Tuesday spelled out its plan to start a community trust fund endowed with $40 million…"
