New Guinea Women Petition for Gambling Ban

25 November 2003

NEW GUINEA – As reported by the New Guinea Post-Courier: "The women of Yalu in Lae and other surrounding villagers want gambling banned and the sale of alcohol to be restricted.

"The women claimed gambling such as poker games, horse races and cards and abuse of alcohol and drugs were among the main causes of violence against women and children.

"These and other demands were made in a petition the women presented to Social Welfare and Development the Minister Lady Carol Kidu, when she visited Yalu village.

"…The petition called for the banning of pokies, bookmakers and other forms of gambling outlets throughout the country.

"…Lady Kidu supported the calls by the Yalu women and said she would take their demands at the national level…"
