N.C. tribe votes on alcohol in casino

CHEROKEE, North Carolina -- As reported by the Asheville Citizen-Times: "Tribal leaders agreed Thursday to allow members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to vote on whether alcohol sales would be permitted at Harrah's Cherokee Casino.

"The Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise board asked Tribal Council for the referendum, saying alcohol sales would increase gambling revenue. Advertisement

"...Some tribal leaders agreed. Council Member Perry Shell said the change in the law has been debated so much in recent years that most people have made up their minds.

"...Thursday marked at least the third time in 18 years that the tribal leaders have taken up the matter.

"...Amanda Swimmer, a tribal elder, asked council members to consider the social costs, such as domestic violence, that might come with alcohol. And, she said, money is no reason to change the longstanding tradition of keeping the reservation dry..."
