Mohawk Casino Employees Face Layoffs

ST. REGIS MOHAWK RESERVATION, New York – As reported by the Associated Press: "The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino has told 175 employees they could be laid off in 60 days if the tribe's gambling compact with the state is not approved by lawmakers.

"Chief James Ransom said notices were given to workers last week to satisfy federal worker-notification requirements.

"…In June, the state Court of Appeals ruled the 1993 tribal-state compact authorizing the tribe to operate the casino was invalid because it was never approved by the Legislature.

"The compact has since been ratified by the state Senate but the Assembly has not voted on it…"
