Mirage closes pool after chlorine pipe bursts

20 July 2009

Las Vegas Sun

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- A chemical leak at The Mirage hotel-casino today closed the resort's pool area on one of the hottest days of the year.

A liquid chlorine pipe on the exterior of the hotel burst about 1 p.m., MGM Mirage spokeswoman Yvette Monet said.

The pool area was closed as a precaution while hazardous materials crews from the Clark County Fire Department cleaned up the leaked chemicals, Monet said. The cause of the pipe burst is unknown.

One guest complained of respiratory problems after the leak but declined medical treatment, Monet said.

The pool will stay closed for the rest of the day but Monet said the hotel expects to reopen the pools Sunday morning.

Chlorine is one of the most commonly manufactured chemicals in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, used in drinking water and swimming pool water to kill harmful bacteria. But symptoms of exposure to large concentrations of chlorine include coughing; a burning sensation in the nose, throat and eyes; nausea and vomiting.
