Millions of tax dollars lost to illegal gaming runners

26 October 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Illegal gambling is depriving the Malaysian government of millions in tax revenue according to a report published in The NewStraits Times.

The newspaper quoted an industry source who pointed out that illegal gaming generates almost identical revenue -- 2.9 million US dollars -- to that achieved by legal operators.

Although arrests have been made, they have yet to detain any of the "main players", while the 6 legal operators pay two monthly taxes totalling 14 percent, the report said.
