Michigan Tribe Gets More Support

13 July 2006

WAYLAND, Michigan – As reported by the Grand Rapids Press: "The City Council is joining other governmental groups in showing support for an Indian tribe's casino plans.

"Council members voted 6-1 to file an amicus brief in support of the Gun Lake Band of the Potawatami Indian Tribe in a 2005 lawsuit. Opponents of the tribe's plans for a 193,500-square-foot casino sued the U.S. Department of Interior, seeking to stop the federal government from putting 145 acres in Wayland Township in trust, a move that would allow the tribe to open the casino.

"…Wayland Township, the Allegan Area Chamber, the Kalamazoo Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Barry County Chamber of Commerce also have filed amicus briefs in support of the tribe."
