Michigan Anti-Casino Group Resurfaces

NEW BUFFALO, Michigan – As reported by the Michigan News-Dispatch: "No one should be taking any best that they've seen the last of TOMAC.

"Just when pro-casino forces thought they had finally gotten the upper hand in their legal tug-of-war with Taxpayers of Michigan Against Casinos, the organization has surfaced again, presenting new legal challenges before the Michigan Court of Appeals.

"This time, TOMAC is asking the court to decide whether Michigan's governor has the constitutional authority to amend gambling compacts without legislative approval.

"At issue, the organization says, are the gambling compacts that were reached with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi in New Buffalo, the Huron Band of Notawaseppi in Battle Creek, the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa in Mackinaw City and the Little River Band of Ottawa in Manistee.

"…According to TOMAC, each compact includes a provision under which the governor claims power to make changes to the compact without legislative oversight…"
