Massachusetts town debates casino issue

PALMER, Massachusetts -- As reported by The Republican: "The Town Council was told that it's smart to study the casino issue, but that Palmer is far from a lock when it comes to getting a gaming resort.

"The council met with state Rep. Todd M. Smola, R-Palmer, and Sen. Stephen M. Brewer, D-Barre, on Wednesday night to get information about casinos, and was told that 17 gaming bills have been filed for the upcoming session.

"Palmer has been in the spotlight as a possible casino site ever since Connecticut-based Mohegan Sun casino announced it wants to build a $1 billion resort casino across from the Massachusetts Turnpike exit on Thorndike Street. Mohegan's Tribal Gaming Authority signed a long-term lease on the 152 acres last year.

"...Mohegan has opened an office downtown to answer questions about its proposed casino project.

"But Smola said Palmer doesn't have a monopoly on casino gaming, and there will be other proposals. There has been talk recently about a casino in the neighboring town of Warren..."
