Massachusetts AG backs gambling crime bill

BOSTON, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Boston Herald: "Facing the inevitability of expanded gambling in the Bay State, law enforcement officials are supporting legislation to strengthen laws dealing with money laundering, organized crime and wiretapping.

"Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley and a coalition of legislators, district attorneys and law enforcement organizations filed a measure yesterday that proponents say will give law enforcement the tools to investigate and prosecute sophisticated criminal enterprises.

"...In April, Senate President Therese Murray said that she, Gov. Deval Patrick and House Speaker Robert DeLeo have agreed to support expanded gambling legislation this fall.

"If the crime bill is approved by the Legislature, it would make it a crime to engage in a financial transaction derived from criminal activity with the intent to promote criminal activity. The measure targets ring leaders who direct the illegal activity, but often do not partake in the commission of the crime. And it updates the Massachusetts wiretapping statute to address the technological advancements in telecommunications..."
