Manchester casino talks called a success

MANCHESTER, England -- As reported by the Manchester Evening News: "Showdown talks between Gordon Brown and senior Manchester politicians over the city's doomed supercasino bid have been hailed as `productive'.

"As reported in later editions of yesterday's M.E.N, the prime minister met with MPs and city council leader Sir Richard Leese to discuss alternatives to the huge gambling complex, planned for Beswick.

"Manchester was chosen as the best site for Britain's first supercasino by an independent panel last year.

"But the prime minister has made it clear he has no intention of allowing the project to go ahead.

"Town hall chiefs - who estimate the casino and a raft of accompanying leisure facilities would have been worth £1bn to the economy and created more than 3,000 jobs - are demanding the government provides alternative forms of regeneration.

"...Las Vegas-style supercasinos, with more than 1,000 unlimited-jackpot slot machines, were originally proposed by Tony Blair during his time as prime minister..."
