Magnate Stays Quiet About Plans

6 March 2001

LAS VEGAS – March 6, 2001 –As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: “…Fabrizio Boccardi considered buying the Desert Inn before Steve Wynn. He toyed with purchasing The New Frontier from Phil Ruffin.

”Neither panned out for a variety of reasons.

”But the 32-year-old Italian businessman swears he's in town for the long run.

”…Boccardi's name was first linked to the desert city in 1998, when a Los Angeles public relations firm he had hired began issuing periodic news releases touting a future Strip casino project that would be built with his involvement.

”…Boccardi's goal, he said, is to build the next-generation casino, a concept mouthed by many in the business, but few, if any, are certain what that means.

”…Like MGM Mirage Chairman Terry Lanni, Boccardi speaks of building a megaresort that ties together entertainment, computers, the Internet, all with an appeal to the 21- to 45-year-old crowd.

”……Boccardi acknowledges that he missed the Strip building boom of the mid- to late-1990s. But he swears that won't happen again.

”His goal, he said, is to develop a brand-driven business with a story line and the sort of exposure that comes from building in Las Vegas.

”…Just don't ask about the nature of his proposed brand or the likely theme of his megaresort because Boccardi won't say…”
