London borough leaders back call to curb fixed-odds betting terminals

28 November 2014

LONDON, England -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- Statement in response to Newham council's proposal to curb casino-style gambling in high streets: Councillor Claire Kober, London Councils’ Executive member for regeneration, said: “Londoners have told us they are fed up with the number of betting shops on their high streets, and they want councils to have more powers to act.

“While we welcome the recent changes that the government has proposed to the planning regulations around betting shops, councils currently have no power to regulate how fixed odd betting terminals operate.

“This form of betting, where the stakes can be as high as £100, has serious repercussions for individuals and families and can damage communities. “That’s why the leaders of all the London boroughs are backing Newham’s proposal to reduce the stakes so that these machines do not carry the same level of risk.”
