Live! Casino celebrates Black History Heroes Awards

23 February 2018

(PRESS RELEASE) -- In celebration of Black History Month, The Cordish Companies' Live! Casino & Hotel and the Md. Washington Minority Companies Association (MWMCA) last night celebrated the 5th annual Black History Heroes Awards. The ceremony, held at Live! Center Stage, recognized 10 Maryland and DC business and community leaders who have contributed to their communities and citizens in a positive way.

Maryland Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford, one of the evening's honorees, also served as the keynote speaker. He discussed the legacies of historical influential African-Americans with ties to Maryland, including Harriet Tubman, Thurgood Marshall and Frederick Douglass, whose contributions to society transcend race, nationality and religion. Rutherford also said while much progress has been made for equal rights and equality, it is important to remember this month that there is still much more that needs to be done.

In addition to the Lt. Governor, other honorees included:
  • Cynthia Brooks, Executive Director, Bea Gaddy Family Centers
  • Jefferi K. Lee, General Manager, WHUT
  • Sheila Brooks, Ph.D., Founder, President and CEO, SRB Communications, LLC
  • The Jonathan Ogden Foundation
  • Jonas Edward Brooks, Investigator, Fire Marshal's Office in Annapolis
  • Pastor James E. Rollins, 15 City
  • Ramsey Harris, Vice President of Business Banking (CRA), PNC Bank, Greater Maryland Market Baltimore/Washington Metropolitan Area
  • Jeanne Hitchcock, Special Advisor, Local Government, Community and Corporate Affairs, Johns Hopkins University
  • Bishop Doctor Abraham Shanklin, Jr., Founder and President, The Center of Transformation
"The Live! family, alongside MWMCA, is honored to host one of the most esteemed events in salute of our African-American community leaders across Baltimore and DC for the fifth year in a row," said Zed Smith, COO, The Cordish Companies. "In line with our core commitment to support the community, these honorees demonstrate exceptional leadership, inclusivity and positive impact to our region's citizens."

"We are honored to award this group of talented business and community professionals, and show our appreciation for their outstanding community work," said Wayne Frazier, President, Md. Washington Minority Companies Association. "We enjoyed an inspiring evening with Live! and the honorees we consider community heroes."
