Kentucky's Horse Racing Industry Divided

KENTUCKY – As reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader: "The new Kentucky Horse Racing Authority will need to hit the ground running on key issues facing the industry.

"…'Slots, drugs, slots, drugs, slots and drugs,' said Reiley McDonald, a partner in Eaton Sales and a member of the Keeneland board. Yesterday, at the opening session of Keeneland's January Horses of All Ages Sale, many in the industry echoed that sentiment.

"…Racetrack casinos are the biggest economic initiative of the horse industry, but the new board probably will not push for them, according to one prominent member.

"…Many in the horse industry do not see how the board can avoid it, though.

"…The racetracks have proposed a constitutional amendment that would allow Kentucky voters to give the tracks casinos, with a portion of the money set aside for breeders' incentive programs.

"…Most of the new board members say they are neutral or undecided on expanding gambling, which the industry plans to press for during the legislative session that began last week…"
