Gaming NewsKansas Tribal Casino Fights Charges18 June 2004KANSAS – As reported by the Kansas City Star: "Attorneys for the general manager of the now-closed Kansas City, Kan., Indian casino filed a motion Tuesday to have two gambling-related charges against him dismissed. "At a hearing in Wyandotte County District Court, attorneys for Ellis Enyart, 52, of Wyandotte, Okla., asked that the charges be dismissed, saying Kansas law enforcement officers lacked the legal authority and jurisdiction over the Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma's 7th Street Casino in downtown Kansas City, Kan. "Kansas authorities closed the casino on April 2. The tribe maintains that because the casino is on tribal land, state and local authorities have no jurisdiction over the facility. "…Enyart faces a felony charge of commercial gambling and a misdemeanor charge of possessing a gambling device. Conviction could result in a sentence of up to 23 months in prison and a $100,000 fine for the felony and up to 6 months in the county jail and a $1,000 fine for the misdemeanor…" |
