Kansas Poker Tournaments Under Investigation

WICHITA, Kansas – As reported by the Wichita Eagle: "As amateur poker tournaments become more popular in Wichita bars, state and local officials are trying to decide whether the games violate any laws.

"Both the Sedgwick County district attorney's office and the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control in Topeka acknowledge that they are taking a closer look at the tournaments, which have attracted hundreds of players in recent months.

"…During the past several months, poker has become a cultural juggernaut.

"…A few local businesses have found ways to capitalize on that popularity.

"…Poker players find a game at a local bar and sign up to play at no cost. They earn points at tournaments. Top point-getters play for the ultimate prize -- a round-trip plane ticket to Las Vegas and two nights in a hotel there.

"…One difference between this tournament and gambling, players said, is that the black, green and white chips hold no value…"
