Kansas county looks at casino plans

WYANDOTTE COUNTY, Kansas -- As reported by The Kansas City Star: "Last fall, Wyandotte County was salivating over the $31 million it stood to receive annually from a casino in western Kansas City, Kan.

"Now the poor economy has cut that projected revenue to less than half that. Today — about six months after developers withdrew a proposal for a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino — the county's Unified Board of Commissioners will consider endorsing two new proposals to manage a state-owned casino, neither of which comes close to the windfall anticipated last year.

"The Kansas Lottery Commission is scheduled to consider approving contracts for each proposal on June 17.

"The two proposals were submitted in April to the Kansas Lottery Commission, which reopened the casino selection process after Kansas Entertainment LLC announced that the economy had made it impossible to finance the $705 million Hard Rock development.

"At the time, Kansas Entertainment, a partnership between Kansas Speedway and the Baltimore-based Cordish Co., said it would re-submit a scaled-back proposal. And it has — a $387 million casino next to Kansas Speedway with 2,300 slot machines, 86 table games, a classic-rock lounge and some restaurants..."
