Ireland: Legislative change to gaming act required

15 June 2011

IRELAND -- Casinos in Ireland are technically illegal under the 1956 Gaming and Lottery Act, The Irish Times reported.

There are 50 places that get around this legislation by running as private members' clubs, the report said.

The proposed super-casino resort for Tipperary will require a change to the country's gambling laws and the possibilities are under discussion.

The most likely scenario would see the regulation of small-scale casinos with up to 15 gaming tables and triple the number of machines, along with one resort type casino, The Irish Times reported.
