Iowa Regulators Skeptical of Proposal

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "State gambling regulators reacted skeptically today to a proposal to reopen Waterloo Greyhound Park by the National Cattle Congress.

"Dave Nagle, a Waterloo lawyer representing the Cattle Congress, urged the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission to consider an license application to permit dog racing the defunct track. He said his non-profit group is convinced that pari-mutuel wagering on greyhound racing can profitable without installing slot machines. like those at tracks in Council Bluffs, Dubuque and Altoona.

"The commission didn't take any action on the request, referring the issue to their staff for further consideration. But several state regulators said afterward that they had questions about the financial viability of a dog track that would solely offer live racing and simulcasts of races from other tracks.

"…The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission plans to discuss the possibility of establishing a moratorium on issuing new gambling licenses at its July 14 meeting. Cattle Congress representatives said they hope the commission will make an exception to any moratorium to permit consideration of reopening the dog track to continue…"
