Indiana Lawmakers Debate Over Gambling Machines

INDIANA – As reported by the Indiana Star Press: "As it has for several years now, the Indiana Legislature is wrestling with what to do about video gambling machines.

"Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson wants what amounts to a downtown casino to fund a new stadium for the Colts. The operators of Hoosier horse racing tracks want the machines to help keep their enterprises afloat. The Indiana Licensed Beverage Commission wants the machines legalized, allowing bars and state government to split the taxes on $1 billion gambled each year.

"State lawmakers also have proposals, and Rep. Tiny Adams, D-Muncie, thinks this Legislative session will be a make-or-break one for video gambling machines.

"…In the meantime, machines continue to operate statewide.

"…Adams estimated that 7,000 Indiana businesses have video gambling machines. For many small bars and taverns, revenue from the machines is sorely needed, he said…"
