Guards Busted for Stealing

5 July 2005

FLORIDA – As reported by the Florida Sun Sentinel: "Three security guards aboard the Sterling Casino Lines cruise ship were supposed to be keeping an eye out for burglars while the ship was docked overnight at Port Canaveral.

"Instead, authorities allege, the three men used the graveyard shift for at least five weeks to steal more than $100,000 from slot machines. Then they bought themselves a Kawasaki racing motorcycle, a Suzuki motorbike, a 2005 Mustang GT, jewelry and clothing, authorities said.

"Clinton Rubaines, 22, Michael Bell, 22, both of Titusville, and their supervisor, David W. Gammon, 24, of Cape Canaveral were arrested Sunday morning, at the end of their shift on charges of grand theft and fraudulent operation of slot machines. They were booked at Brevard County Jail on $5,000 bail each.

"…The three men were responsible for guarding the ship after the day's second sailing, which ended at midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends. However, after passengers were long gone, they deactivated the security cameras and then, using a stolen key, unlocked the slot machines, [Sgt. Andrew Walters of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office] said.

"…Investigators say the three men admitted their roles and told investigators they had been removing money from slot machines for more than five weeks…"
