Grand Sierra Resort strike vote planned

RENO, Nevada -- As reported by the Reno Gazette Journal: "Members of Culinary Workers Union Local 226 employed at Reno's Grand Sierra Resort will vote later this month on a measure that could lead to a strike, union officials said Monday.

"'We are having a vote on Aug. 30 for the members at the Grand Sierra to authorize the negotiating committee to call for economic action up to and including a strike, if we need to,' said Kevin Kline, the union's chief negotiator.

"Kline said the 1,000-member union also might consider boycotts, pickets lines, rallies and civil disobedience.

"...It would be the first strike of a Reno casino in 58 years, said Andrew Barbano, editor of NevadaLabor.com, and State Archivist Guy Rocha.

"...'Monthly health care payments are at the core of the disagreement, union members said.

"...Union members have given up large wage increases since the current contract first was negotiated in 2001 to keep their health care benefits, Kline said..."
