Grand Forks Works Towards Resolution

GRAND FORKS, North Dakota – As reported by the Grand Forks Herald: "Grand Forks City Council members said Wednesday they will begin work on a resolution of support for a proposed American Indian casino just south of the city.

"Bill Johnson, who represents the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in its casino project, pleaded with city officials to take a stance after months of on-and-off discussions. The city's support, he said, is the linchpin for any further progress on the project.

"The question for some council members, though, was the wording of that support. They said they were interested in the casino, but couldn't yet conclude it would be a boon for the city without having some sort of public discussion.

"The compromise the council members agreed to was a resolution 'supporting the idea of a casino in Grand Forks.'

"…Besides some sort of state approval, the tribe would also need money to put together an environmental impact statement, which the federal government apparently requires for an off-reservation casino…"
