Gaming NewsGovernor's Slot Plan Could Jeopardize Pimlico13 November 2003MARYLAND – As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "The massive overhaul planned for Pimlico Race Course faced a cloud of doubt on Wednesday when Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich Jr. expressed his support for a slot machine plan that would limit gambling licenses to one per company. "If that plan is approved by lawmakers, several racing industry experts believe that the Maryland Jockey Club, which owns and operates both Pimlico and Laurel Park, would opt to install slot machines at Laurel given its proximity to the lucrative Washington, D.C. market, the Baltimore Sun reports. "Maryland Jockey Club President Joe De Francis stated in October that Pimlico, the home of the Preakness Stakes (G1) located in Baltimore, could close if slot machines are allowed at other Maryland tracks but not Pimlico…" |
