Ellis Park to close

KENTUCKY -- As reported by the Louisville Courier-Journal: "Ellis Park owner Ron Geary said last night that he is closing the 86-year-old Henderson, Ky., racetrack, which was scheduled to open its summer meeting tomorrow.

"Geary said he made the decision after a federal judge denied his request for an injunction against Kentucky horsemen that would have allowed him to offer the track's races to national account-wagering outlets that take bets by phone and online.

"Geary called it a 'permanent decision' for the track founded in 1922 that survived bankruptcy, flooding and even a tornado.

"...Rick Hiles, president of the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, said he hated to see the decision but defended his group's efforts to get a larger share of account-wagering revenues, saying the horsemen's revenue-sharing plan would have resulted in more money for Geary as well..."
