Edmonton Casino Plans in Jeopardy

23 December 2003

EDMONTON, Alberta – As reported by the Journal: The future of a new $30-million downtown Baccarat Casino remains in doubt because the two city councillors who forced the company to redraft its original plan don't like the new design.

"The new proposal features too much parking out front, which would create an unattractive sight along 104th Avenue, Bryan Anderson and Dave Thiele say.

"Gateway Casinos, which recently withdrew its first application to replace the existing Baccarat Casino with a new, 865-square-metre building near the southwest corner of 104th Avenue and 104th Street, is now proposing a different site plan.

"The proposal has the casino facing south, toward 104th Avenue, rather than east as originally designed.

"The change is significant because the first design angered the owners of an apartment complex to the west, who complained that the building's residents would have an unpleasant view of the casino's long, back wall. Under the new plan, residents would look out at a shorter, side wall.

"But the new Baccarat building also would be shifted north, creating a parking area between it and 104th Avenue.

"'I didn't want to see a huge expanse of parking along 104th Avenue,' Anderson said.

"…Both Anderson and Thiele have become a source of frustration for the developers…"
