Delta Downs $1 Million Purse Returns

VINTON, Louisiana -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Delta Downs plans to bring back a $1 million purse for its Delta Jackpot race in 2004 because of the exposure and money it generated this month, track officials say.

"The race offers the second-largest purse in North America for 2-year-old thoroughbreds. It started in 2002 with a purse of $500,000, which was doubled for this year's race.

"…The Dec. 5 race generated a record amount of handle for the track since Boyd Gaming bought it in 2001 for $130.1 million. Purses have been boosted sharply over the past two years through proceeds from the track's slot-machine casino…"
