Debate over New York gambling revenue

4 March 2008

CANTON, New York -- As reported by the Watertown Daily Times: "A share of slot machine revenue from the Hogansburg casino has been a boon for St. Lawrence County, but legislators don't agree on how to spend it.

"The Legislature will soon forward a plan to spend the county's $575,000 cut of the state's gaming compact with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. It's unlikely to be a unanimous decision.

"Legislature Chairman J. Patrick Turbett, D-Potsdam, is urging colleagues to consider setting some aside for joint projects with the tribe. Mr. Turbett and Mohawk Chief James W. Ransom have discussed creating a group devoted to supporting development on the reservation and in neighboring towns.

"That will probably wait because a legislative committee failed to include it during a recent meeting.

"...The spending plan has drawn criticism for including money to promote the casino and treat gambling addictions..."
