Gaming NewsDebate over New York gambling revenue4 March 2008CANTON, New York -- As reported by the Watertown Daily Times: "A share of slot machine revenue from the Hogansburg casino has been a boon for St. Lawrence County, but legislators don't agree on how to spend it. "The Legislature will soon forward a plan to spend the county's $575,000 cut of the state's gaming compact with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. It's unlikely to be a unanimous decision. "Legislature Chairman J. Patrick Turbett, D-Potsdam, is urging colleagues to consider setting some aside for joint projects with the tribe. Mr. Turbett and Mohawk Chief James W. Ransom have discussed creating a group devoted to supporting development on the reservation and in neighboring towns. "That will probably wait because a legislative committee failed to include it during a recent meeting. "...The spending plan has drawn criticism for including money to promote the casino and treat gambling addictions..." |
