Crowds split at Biloxo casino hearing

14 August 2007

BILOXI, Mississippi -- As reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald: "After developers spent nearly an hour revealing their plans for turning the old Tivoli Hotel site into a billion-dollar casino project, the crowd had a say at Monday night's public hearing.

"The audience of more than 150 people was split between those for and against the project, while those in favor of rezoning the site were louder and applauded every positive comment.

"The City Council directed the Planning Commission to hold the hearing to get public sentiment for rezoning the site to waterfront. That would be required before the Gaming Commission would rule on whether the property is a legal site. The hearing will be continued at the Planning Commission meeting at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Community Development Department. Comments also can be e-mailed to planning@biloxi.ms.us.

"...Those who spoke for the project said it is just what the area needs for jobs, to get projects that were already approved off the ground and to increase the likelihood families with property on the Point can sell their land for a good profit to investors.

"...Some said they admired the project, but the site was wrong and doesn't meet Gaming Commission guidelines for a legal site..."
