Couple Sues Harrah's, Rincon Tribe Over Fire Death

14 June 2005

SAN DIEGO, California – As reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune: "A couple whose daughter died in the 2003 Paradise fire filed suit Monday against Harrah's and a band of Indians, alleging they refused to equip firefighters with the resources needed to protect the reservation.

"John and Lori Roach refiled the lawsuit nine months after a court ruled that remedies sought against Harrah's must be exhausted through a hearing process before the Rincon Tribal Council prior to seeking resolution in federal court.

"…The fire was set a half-mile from Harrah's Rincon Casino & Resort in the early morning hours of Oct. 26, 2003.

"…The suit alleges that the Rincon band and Harrah's would not build a fire station or provide adequate resources to the Valley Center Protection District to protect the reservation, despite being asked to do so by the fire district when the casino's temporary facility opened in January 2001. "
