Gaming NewsCherokee casino expansion brings jobs, renewal2 February 2007NORTH CAROLINA – As reported by the Asheville Citizen-Times: "In an age when we have become sadly accustomed to a numbing litany of plant closings and layoffs, the news out of Cherokee was jolting. "The Eastern Band of Cherokee announced an expansion of the Harrah's Casino and Hotel that will bring 1,000 new jobs to Western North Carolina. "A massive building plan involves remodeling the current casino, building a third hotel tower and adding retail space, two additional parking decks, a spa and a restaurant. "…This building boom comes at what is already the largest employer in the state west of Asheville. Nearly 2,000 people are already employed in the Cherokee operation, which earns around $155 million annually. "…Whether live dealers become a reality, news of 1,000 new jobs — jobs that don't bring with them the environmental issues associated with, say, heavy manufacturing — is a welcome boost for the entire region. "…Downtown Cherokee is getting a sorely needed facelift. Attractions such as Unto These Hills, Oconaluftee Village and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian have been improved and enhanced. "…Oh, and there's the ambitious 13-point environmental declaration issued by the Eastern Band that sets stewardship goals for the area. That document includes a wildlife management plan, environmental impact standards, air, water and species monitoring provisions…" |
