Casino robber sentenced

MONTANA – As reported by the Billings Gazette: "A man who used a gun to rob the Billings Gold Dust Casino of $500 last year will spend 27 years in federal prison.

"U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull Wednesday sentenced Rolando Perez, 29, to the statutory maximum of 20 years for the robbery and to a mandatory consecutive seven years for using a gun in a crime of violence.

"Cebull designated Perez a career offender because of two previous burglary convictions in Washington, which he ruled were crimes of violence. The Nov. 6, 2005, casino robbery was his third offense, which increased the sentencing guideline range. Because the range exceeded the maximum under the law, the judge sentenced Perez to the maximum.

"The judge noted Perez's long criminal record that began at age 13 with an armed robbery. Perez had escaped from state corrections when he committed the Billings casino robbery…"
