Casino bets on community

HAMILTON, New Zealand -- As reported by Stuff.co.nz: "SkyCity Hamilton will put more emphasis on 'giving back to the community' despite earnings sliding for the first half of 2009.

"The city's casino posted a 12 per cent dip in earnings before interest and tax to $8.8 million for the first half compared to the same period last year, taking a slightly harder hit than the total New Zealand earnings which fell by 4.7 per cent to $114.7m.

"...Weekly charity quizzes and blackjack quizzes are part of the group's initiative to make a positive impact on the community, as well as hosting charity dinners at a minimum cost to non-profitable organisations.

"The slightly sluggish New Zealand performance for SkyCity resulting in a flat half-year result was offset by relatively buoyant economic conditions in Australia..."
