Underage servers face job loss

WEST VIRGINIA -- As reported by the West Virginia Gazette: "About 100 employees at the state's two Northern Panhandle racetracks faced prospects of losing their jobs later this year, through an unintended consequence of the new law allowing casino-style table games.

"When Mountaineer Racetrack and Gaming Resort in Hancock County and the Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center introduce table games, the minimum age for people entering the gaming areas will jump from 18 to 21.

"About 100 under-21 servers, video lottery service technicians, security personnel and floor attendants would no longer be able to enter the gaming areas of the tracks — without an exception amended into the table game rules. - advertisement -

"On Wednesday, members of the state Lottery Commission wrestled with a grandfather clause to allow those employees to keep their jobs.

"...Drafting a provision to protect the jobs of the under-21 workers at those tracks — and potentially at Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center — was one of about 50 proposed changes to the 118 pages of rules on regulation of racetrack table games debated by the commission Wednesday..."
