New York Leaders Want Regional Approach

NEW PALTZ, New York – As reported by the Daily Freeman: "The best way to tackle the thorny issue of a potential casino in Ulster County is not at the town or village level, a group of local leaders says.

"A regional approach is the only way to take on this controversial matter, the Ulster County Supervisors Association asserts, so it is appointing a liaison to the county's casino gambling study committee and hoping to start talks with the county and neighboring Sullivan County.

"…The formation of the county committee was prompted, in part, by renewed interest by American Indian tribes and developers in locating a casino in Ulster County, evidenced by the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma's proposal to build a $300 million casino and resort complex on the Winston Farm in Saugerties.

"That proposal prompted a whirlwind of opposition, with the town boards in several Ulster County communities - including Saugerties, Woodstock, New Paltz, Marbletown, Gardiner and Shandaken - passing resolutions against casino gambling in either their respective towns or in the county as a whole.

"But as several town supervisors pointed out on Tuesday, barring a casino in one town does not prevent a gaming hall from locating in the town next door, which would have a tremendous impact on neighboring towns…"
