Rhino

16 April 2006
Rhino was the most feared pit boss at the Dunes Hotel. When he tromped through the dice pit chewing on his cigar, even the players got nervous. So you can imagine what it was like for the employees. One day he tromped up to the table where I was working, and growled to the boxman, "When you get a break, call home. ... (read more)

King of Vegas

19 March 2006
How does that old song go? "There's no business like show business...like no business I know." Hey, I've always been a movie and TV fan. When I was a kid I wanted to be a movie star when I grew up. What a glamorous way to make a living. Plus I wouldn't have to ask my dad for money any more. Then it happened. ... (read more)

The Bosses

26 February 2006
The bosses at the Dunes either loved you or hated you, depending on which stool at the bar they woke up on. In my case, one of the latter was a balding floorman named Jack. He was a stone-cold out-and-out homo, and didn't care who knew it. A sailor walked by the table one day and Jack said, "Mmm, sea food." I got on his wrong side by a simple innocent mistake on my part. ... (read more)

The Owners

16 January 2006
I was working at the Dunes Hotel in Vegas. The place was all about junkets: one a week from New York, one every other week from Miami and St. Louis. The airfare was free, so were the rooms, the booze, the meals, the shows. All the junket players had to do was gamble, or they'd never be invited back again. ... (read more)

Man with a Plan

18 December 2005
I was a man with a plan, a man with a future, a man with the world at his feet. I was a dice dealer at the Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas! Man, if my friends could see me now. The Dunes towered over everything in sight like a technicolor lighthouse, and tourists and celebrities alike flocked to the place night and day. ... (read more)

Taking a Marker

13 November 2005
I was working in the big time, dealing craps at the biggest brashest hotel in Vegas, the Dunes Hotel and Country Club. It was a lot different than the Mint, where I used to work. At the Mint, eighteen across meant three dollars on each of the numbers, or eighteen people passed out at the bar. At the Dunes, ... (read more)

Zooks

14 October 2005
My buddy Russ had introduced me to his friend Bill, who was a big shot at the Dunes. After $500 changed hands (half of which I still owed Russ), Bill introduced me to Johnny, the shift boss, and three days later the phone rang. It was Johnny. "We've got an opening on swing shift. You start on Monday, six to two." I was so excited I didn't sleep for two days. ... (read more)

The Dunes

11 September 2005
My buddy Russ had set me up with a possible job at the Dunes Hotel in Vegas. All it would take was $500, which I would "loan" to a pit boss named Bill that Russ knew from his hometown. It was a risky move on my part, but sometimes you have to go out on a limb, especially when you're almost flat broke with no job in sight. ... (read more)

How to Get a Job in Vegas

7 August 2005
My buddy Russ was working at the Sahara. Even though I wasn't employed at the moment we still stayed in touch. He was a funny guy. Grew up in some little burg in Pennsylvania, his folks had a lot of money, and one day he came tooling into Vegas in a new Cadillac. He loved that car more than life itself, waxed it so many times it didn't even get wet when it rained. ... (read more)
