Gaming GuruThe Truth About Blackjack and Slots26 May 2013
QUESTION: The blackjack rules I play under yield about a .38% house advantage. Does that (somehow) include the variables of doubling down, splitting and 3 to 2 blackjack payoff? I thought that I could overcome that house edge using those variables but it looks like I might be wrong and therefore doomed to eventual failure in coming out ahead. ... (read more)
Craps Payouts and Blackjack Percentages23 May 2013
QUESTION: I make all the craps bets you say I shouldn’t. I know the percentages are lousy, but I play for cheap, never lose too much and when I get a little lucky, I have some big wins. I know I lose more than I win, but the excitement of the big ones does it for me. Anyway, I’m not writing for advice about that. ... (read more)
Those Community Machines23 May 2013
Slot machines are constantly changing and evolving. The three-reel games of yore are still with us, but the kings of the slot floor are video gamess with their array of animation, special effects, 3D sound, second-screen bonuses, free spin events, mystery pays and multitiered jackpots. Part of the slot evolution and revolution has been the rise of community-style slots. ... (read more)
Splitting Those Eights and Other Conundrums in Blackjack23 May 2013
It was late on a Monday night on an overnight casino stay, and the table games pit was mostly empty. I was at a $10 blackjack table with three other players, a man and a woman in their late 20s or early 30s who seemed to be a couple, and a fellow with a shaved head and gray beard who appeared to be in his 50s or early 60s. ... Deuces Wild and Royal Flushes19 May 2013
QUESTION: I have a question about Deuces Wild. I love the full-pay game. It’s the one I first played in Las Vegas in the ’80s and it’s still the game I play whenever I can find it. I find it less and less, however. I find myself more and more settling for the games that reduce the four of a kind pays to 4-for-1, but also pay 4 on the full houses and pay 3 instead of 2 on flushes. ... (read more)
Three Card Poker Oddities16 May 2013
I don’t play Three Card Poker very often. Blackjack and video poker are my games of choice, though I do spread my time around to nearly all casino games. I spend the most time on the games that give me the best chance to win, and Three Card Poker moved down the list when it became common for casinos to pay only 3-1 instead of the original 4-1 on flushes in the Pair Plus portion of the game. ... Doubling for Less at Blackjack12 May 2013
QUESTION: When is the right time to double for less? I was at a $10 blackjack table, and there was one big player, betting $50 or $100 a hand. Sometimes when he had a $100 bet, he’d double down for $50 instead of $100. I noticed he was mostly doing it when the dealer had a 7, 8 or 9 face up. I suppose he ... (read more)
How Many Lines to Play on Video Slots9 May 2013
For a large majority of players, a trip to the casino means some time on five-reel video slots. It’s not just that they are an entry level game, easy to play with no strategy required. Most players stick with them. Electronic gaming devices account for about 80 percent of casino revenue nowadays --- more in some jurisdictions. ... (read more)
