Who Needs Training?

2 April 2011

There is no such thing as a bad player only an untrained one.

That is my company motto. I thought up that motto based on long term observations while in the casino. In addition, if you go on the Internet or to the library as much as I do, you get to read a lot of data about gaming. One piece of data you will find is information collected by the Nevada Gaming Commission. The data they collect is all public information because it is really tax information. What each casino generates and what each table and machine takes in is important to the tax man, and that information is available to anyone who takes the time to look for it. When I looked up that data some interesting statistics showed up.

For example, casinos in Nevada are enjoying a 14 to 15% return, on average, for every game of 21. The interesting part is they really should be getting less than one percent return. If a 21 player just plays basic strategy (the correct way to hit, stand and etc.), the casino should win about 80 cents for every 100 dollars played. What is really happening is the casinos are getting $14 to $15 per $100 played.

What this is telling me is there are a lot of casino players who need training. Just looking at blackjack confirms to me that most people who play the game don't really know how to do it correctly. My suggestion is to take a class, buy a book, or go to the Internet for information about your favorite game. Just some basic playing and betting strategies can help you to last a little longer and maybe win a little more on your next casino visit.

Bet You Didn't Know

  • Currently, more than 43 percent of Nevada's state general fund is fed by gambling tax revenue.
  • When playing blackjack and you have sixteen and the dealer is showing a ten, Basic Strategy says to hit. If you hit, you'll lose 75% of the time. If you don't hit, you'll lose 77% of the time.
  • The Venetian Macao casino in Macau, China has 3400 slot machines and 800 gaming tables in a 550,000 square feet casino.
  • When one adds up the number of letters used for the names of playing cards -- ace (3), two (3) three (5), four (4), five (4), six (3), seven (5), eight (5), nine (4), ten (3), jack, (4), queen (5), king (4) -- the total comes to 52, the exact number of cards in a standard deck.
  • Horse and dog racing is legal in Nevada, but there are no horse or dog tracks within the state.
  • There are dozens of games to play in a casino in Las Vegas. However, the number one game played by more players every year is the 25-cent slot machine.
  • Numerous surveys through the years found that 75% of players in a casino will be winning sometime during their play, but only four percent go home a winner.
