Trump Dump? Depends Who You Ask

27 February 2012

I love patronizing the high end Atlantic City and Las Vegas casino hotels. I take advantage of the gourmet restaurants, the beautiful bars and the rooms and suites with panoramic views. They are my primary destination when I am heading to a casino adventure.

However, I admit sometimes I like to go to the grittier places. They have a much different vibe, that as a lifelong student of human behavior I find intriguing.
I recently posted on the Goldentouchcasino.com private gaming forum that the Trump Plaza casino in Atlantic City is offering $3 and $5 craps with five times odds.

Some of my fellow posters replied that the casino is rundown and in desperate need of a remodel. They called it "Dump Plaza" rather than Trump Plaza. They also expressed concern about the clientele.

I respect their opinions but I believe they are a bit misguided.

True, the place is rundown. But I am there just to gamble. I am not living there.
As to the clientele it has been my experience that at any given time predators, pickpockets, bums and other assorted dregs of the earth can be found in any of Atlantic City casinos, particularly those located along the boardwalk. Losing sight of this fact can be a critical mistake.

In my opinion, all Atlantic City visitors must be at their highest degree of caution at all times.

When I am in AC, I travel light. I keep my wallet in a front pocket. My money is in the other front pocket. My back pockets are empty.

I am cautious wherever I go, particularly in parking lots. I avoid walking on the boardwalk alone at night. I recall an incident a few years ago when I was walking down the boardwalk at 1 AM. Naturally it was dark. I was with five friends, all big guys, the predators certainly would not mess with us, but I saw them there lurking in the darkness, waiting to pounce on a weak or drunk victim.

Let's face it. Atlantic City is not known for having the finest leaders in the country. The town has an infamous record of corruption and incompetence. Politician after politician has ended his term under state or federal indictment.
The city is terribly mismanaged.

Do you see AC Police Officers regularly walking, bicycling or driving scooters along the boardwalk? I never do.

Are there security cameras placed strategically and conspicuously on the boardwalk to discourage nefarious behavior? I never saw them.

Do the casinos have their security guards stationed in conspicuous locations around the outside their property to protect the visitors? No, they do not.

As a matter of fact, the next time you are in AC take a look at the security. These people are a joke. Most are wizened senior citizens, obese women and men not much taller than jockeys. They are little more than customer service for people to ask directions. They do not appear to be very proactive.

I do not blame the guards; they are very poorly paid. The AC casinos choose not to spend the money to hire real security. Conversely, I have seen excellent security in Las Vegas. Not only is the Las Vegas force physically imposing, many are cross trained as Emergency Medical Technicians.

Anyhow, back to my original point, the gaming minimums in Trump Plaza. Those players looking to minimize the house edge should not dismiss the casino. Let's take a look at a player that wants to bet Pass Line and Come bets that total $20.

If a player goes to a table that has a $5 minimum with 5x Odds, he can expect the following when he/she wins the bet:

Point    Pass Line Bet    Odds Bet    True Odds    Total Payout
6/8$5$156 to 5$23
5/9$5$153 to 2$29
4/10$5$152 to 1$35

If a player goes to a table that has a $10 minimum and bets the same $20, he can expect the following when he/she wins the bet:

Point    Pass Line Bet    Odds Bet    True Odds    Total Payout
6/8$10$106 to 5$22
5/9$10$103 to 2$25
4/10$10$102 to 1$30

As you can see from the charts above, the same $20 risked has a better return at the table with the lower minimum.

Just as none of us would surrender an additional 1% edge to the casino on a 6-to-5 blackjack game as opposed to a 3-to-2 blackjack game, we should also be stingy with our craps dollars.

Finally, you have to decide what is important to you. Keep in mind that unless you are playing at the higher minimum tables the comps you are going to receive at the upper tier casinos will be minimal. At lower minimum casinos, the action of a mid-level player stands out. Players that do not warrant a second glance at the ritzy places can rate a personal host at the bargain-basement casinos.
