Timeless Proverbs for Gamblers

18 February 2012

Proverbs have been around for a very long time and are used all around the world by different cultures and are generally based on the culture's experiences and histories. The dictionary tells us a proverb, from the Latin proverbium, is a "simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated." While the context and language may differ from place to place, all proverbs are characterized by the fact that they have been passed down through generations to express a simple truth, usually based on common sense or practical experience. Mostly because of their long experience in life and familiarity with many task and topics associated with life itself, elders are the ones usually called upon to give advice to the young and inexperienced. Proverbs help in providing this transfer of experiences. Today we receive a great amount of our knowledge and learning through schooling, but experience is still an important part of our overall education.

Different cultures from around the globe have also been gambling and playing games of luck going back thousands of years. Hence, there is a rich collection of proverbs having to do with gambling and luck. Some proverbs provide words of advice, while others provide simple statements of fact. It is important to understand that experience is considered by many to be the best teacher, but we need to remember that it can also be the most expensive teacher. This is an important factor when it comes to gambling. Studying proverbs can help with getting experience at a much cheaper cost than tying to gain it while in a casino. No matter what proverb you read, each is based on long experience gained through the ages and should be looked upon as one of the tools to be used when learning about gambling.
