Selecting a Video Poker Machine

20 August 2011

Video poker is one of only five games on which a player can hope to move the odds into his or her favor. (The others are blackjack, horse racing, sports betting and live poker.)

There are two requirements to gain the upper hand at video poker: (1) select the best machines, and (2) play the correct strategy. Selecting the best machines is one of the cornerstones of winning at video poker. To start with, you must review the payout chart posted on the machine. You want a machine that will give you the most for your money.

Remember all machines are not the same. They might look alike and may even sit side by side, but they could have different payout charts. The best game to start learning and playing video poker is Jacks or Better. In this game start by reading the first payout column on the face of the machine and look to see what a Full House and a Flush pay for a single coin. For example, if it pays 9 for a Full House and 6 for a Flush, it's a "9/6 Jacks or Better" machine and has a higher payoff than an 8/5 machine that only pays 8 for a Full House and 5 for a Flush. It might not seem like very much, but it is a considerable difference and you will want to always play at the higher payout. By the way, a 9/6 Jacks or Better machine will pay back 99.5%, which is better than any slot machine will ever pay. After you master 9/6 Jacks or Better, learning the strategy for Deuces Wild and Jacks Wild will pay back even more.
