Roulette, a fun game

21 July 2012

Roulette, a game of chance, is the oldest known casino game. It originated in France during the late 17th and early 18th century. The best known center for the game has been the gambling casino in Monte Carlo, Monaco. In Europe the roulette wheels have 36 numbers and one zero. In the United States, roulette wheels have a zero and a double zero. With the double zero the house advantage is fixed at 5.26 percent. With the single zero it drops to 2.70 percent. Therefore, single zero wheels are better for the player. There is an exception to these odds and that is when a player bets on the five-number spot. This wager which covers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3 spots on the American wheel, with the zero and double zero, and allows the house advantage to jump to a whopping 7.89 percent. There are a few casinos that do offer the single zero wheels, look for them when you want to play roulette.

Knowing the fixed house advantage, the player should look at roulette as an easy, fun and exciting casino game. There is no known system of winning at roulette. It is not a game to play with "serious" money. Therefore, when playing roulette we recommend you pick your favorite numbers, play hunches and try different plays. Try playing the outside spots like red-black, high-low, odd-even. Also consider the columns, with 12 numbers or the dozens that also have 12 numbers. The payouts are smaller than the numbers, but the odds for the player are greatly improved. Most of all enjoy the game and the company you run into while playing this old and fun casino game.

Bet You Didn't Know

  • "Raking it in" comes from the European casino world where croupiers use a rake in roulette to pull in losing chips and push out winning ones.
  • Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, during his only one visit to Las Vegas, "No one can possibly win at roulette unless he steals money from the table while the croupier isn't looking."
  • Roulette wheels are precision manufactured with separators having tolerances within 0.02 millimeters. In most states, gaming regulators test wheels with 10,000 spins to assure compliance that each and every spin is a random one.
  • You can go to http://www.gambling-systems.com/single-zero.html for a list of single zero games around the world.
  • The Central Casino in Mar del Plate, in Argentina, is the largest casino in South America. It has 102 single zero roulette wheels.
  • The diamond-shaped deflectors, located on the vertical wall of roulette wheels, are called "canoes." The reason for that unusual name is because of their upside-down canoe shape.
