Playing with Winners

25 January 2020

Playing with winners -- what does that mean? When sitting at a blackjack table, you will notice that some players know how to play the game correctly, while others seem to make the same bad mistakes hand after hand.

Most of the readers of Casino City Times know that to win at blackjack you must know “Basic Strategy.” That is the foundation to be a winner at that game. Watching players make deviations from Basic Strategy is not uncommon.

Many blackjack players move up to card counting, then a few other techniques, like tracking aces, or using Don Schlesinger’s Illustrious–18 Indices.

Each deviation gives a player a small additional advantage. But making deviation mistakes over five or six hands in a six-deck shoe tells you that the player is a loser and doesn’t know what they are doing.

Losers also seem to get defensive and don’t want to take any advice from other players on how to play the game. I’ve even seen dealers make suggestions, and a bad player still will not take the advice. When you see those situations, I suggest that you take a course of action that includes moving to another table. I base that on the speculation that losers bring additional losing situations.

I’ve seen whole tables start to lose when those poor un-educated players make bad moves again and again. I don’t know the reason they do that, it’s probably because a lack of know-how; but I don’t want to stay at the same table with a poor player.

On the other hand, by following the same philosophy, but in the opposite direction; playing with winners brings winning situations. It’s been said that emotions affect performance, and winning produces positive emotions in all players. That can lead to higher aspirations and cause other players to be helpful toward their follow table mates. I’ve seen players jump in to help another play correctly when a tough call is required. That is the table you want to play at. It has winners playing at it, and that will make it more profitable for you.

(Nevada passed a law in 1995 outlawing any device, mechanical or electronic, that could affect or predict a game’s outcome.)
