The law of money management
You need to know how to manage your bankroll if you want to be successful at gambling. First, know what you can afford to wager during your visit to a gambling establishment.

Know how important it is to separate your gambling funds from your other expenses like hotel, food, entertainment and transportation. Know how to divide your gambling budget for each day of your visit and for each different session.

Remember, a session is that period; morning, afternoon or evening, where you spend a given amount of time gambling. You must be able to establish a win and loss goal before you play and set stop-loss limits to help insure a winning visit.

The stop-loss technique is similar to working with your stock broker. Let’s say you buy a stock for $10 and it goes to $20. You tell your broker to sell if it drops back to $15; that way you still end up with a profit. The same is true when gambling. You might start at $100 and if you should win another hundred; you should establish a stop-loss at $150. As you continue to play, if you start losing, you would stop playing altogether when you drop to $150, thereby ending a session as a winner.

As part of this law, it’s also important to keep records of your visits and play so you can analyze them in detail before future visits.

The law of practice
If you are a blackjack player, you need to practice your game frequently and review the basic strategy chart regularly. For other games like craps, roulette, poker, baccarat and three-card-poker, you need to continuously review odds charts. You must know what the best bets are and which ones to avoid. Read everything you can about your game.

Read this website! Subscribe to magazines or newsletters about gambling. Check out the latest books in bookstores and libraries. Participate in chat rooms on the internet. Keep abreast of the latest trends about your specific game. Play your game at home, or on one of those electronic hand-held games or on the internet, but most of all, "Practice, practice, practice."

BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW

  • Just as in Nevada, reports to the Colorado state regulators indicate a much higher payback on slots throughout the casinos within the state than is mandatory by state law.

  • The lowest actual slot payouts in Vegas can be found at the airports and in stores.

  • Nevada actually allows machines to pay back more than 100% of the money played in them. This is not so in Atlantic City.

  • Sadly, players will not find many machines paying back more than 100% in Vegas even though these are legally allowed.

• Two Missouri assemblymen introduced a bill to the state legislature in 1909 to control and license poker players in order to prevent “millions of dollars lost annually by incompetent and foolish persons who do not know the value of a poker hand.” The bill never became law.
