KOA pulling up stakes on Strip, moving to Boulder Highway

6 October 2014

Kampgrounds of America is moving its designated recreational vehicle park in Las Vegas from the Strip to the Boulder Highway.

KOA and Boyd Gaming Corp. announced an agreement this week to re-brand the Sam’s Town RV park as Las Vegas KOA at Sam’s Town. Under terms of the lease agreement, KOA assumed operations Wednesday of the 500-space RV park adjacent to Boyd’s Sam’s Town.

KOA had previously been associated with the RV park attached to Circus Circus on the Strip.

MGM Resorts International announced this week the Circus Circus RV park had closed and would be renovated to include 170 spaces.

Some of the park’s land will be used for the $40 million open-air concert venue that MGM Resorts is creating on 40 acres at the corner of Sahara Avenue and the Strip. The venue will house the Rock in Rio music festival next year, as well as other outdoor concert events.

KOA operates more than 485 locations in North America. The agreement returns KOA to Boulder Highway, where the company opened the first Las Vegas KOA in 1971.

The Sam’s Town location has both 30- and 50-amp full hook-up sites, pull-through sites and extended stay opportunities. The park is landscaped with shade trees, grass and designated pet areas.

Campground amenities include two pools with hot tubs, laundry and shower facilities, cable and Wi-Fi, and a barbecue area.

Steve Thompson, senior vice president of operations for Boyd Gaming’s Nevada region, said the agreement with KOA will increase the national exposure of Sam’s Town and introduce new customers to the hotel-casino.

“KOA is a highly trusted, globally recognized hospitality brand, hosting nearly 1 million households each year,” Thompson said.

MGM Resorts said the RV Park at Circus Circus would open later this year in the same location. It will feature 60- to 80-foot pull-throughs with options for grass, patios, outdoor furniture and complimentary Wi-Fi, in addition to pool and laundry facilities.
