Down and Out in Atlantic City

14 August 2011

What good are fair-weather friends who are only around when you are on top? Yes, there are some people who seem to always be on top. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. Variance can produce extreme swings and God has a great sense of humor with me. Lord knows I've had my share of ups and downs in my 15 years of playing craps in Atlantic City.

Advantage play has precepts to protect you from yourself. If you are anything like me and have something of an addictive personality, do your best to learn these rules. The rules get made for a reason, usually by someone who has learned a hard lesson.

Drinking while playing, chasing losses, playing when you have no business playing will cut heavy into the nights when you showed great discipline and carefully carved the casino up as if with a scalpel.

I know firsthand why the elder statesmen say to practice sound money management by betting a percentage of your bankroll that has been allocated only for gambling. This means if you ain't got it, don't play it.

I have made every mistake in the book and have learned some very hard lessons on my ever evolving road to being a serious advantage player. I am telling my story to you in real time. Although I have come a long way since my crazy crapper days, I do occasionally relapse. It happens to the best of us. The important thing is that you get up, dust yourself off, and get back to the tried and true ways of beating the game of craps. Those tried and true ways of beating the game consist of a good controlled throw, wise wagering, and a sound money management plan.

I have slept with beautiful women in beautiful suites that have taken up half the floor of an Atlantic City Hotel, but I have also slept on the beach, in my car, in the bus center waiting on Western Union because not only did I lose my money, I also lost my bus ticket.

I have found myself in places I had no business being in and have even been robbed at gunpoint and have made it out of some sticky situations in Las Vegas. I've been cut, pickpocketed, and thrown out of one of my favorite casinos after thwarting their futile attempt to cheat me. I saw a six-on-five fight at a new AC casino a week after it opened. It seemed like it took security an hour to show up.

For all of you aspiring dice controllers/advantage players, make sure you have a throw that gives you a real edge over the house; make sure your betting strategy is sound, and you have enough money to withstand the violent swings of variance.

Pull your belt up, and man up. Craps is not for the faint of heart. If you develop a throw that gives you an edge, you make bets your skill can beat, and size your initial spread by a small percentage of your bankroll, you will then color a winner in the long run and there is nothing variance can do about it.

Also, make sure you watch out for the tricks the casinos use to take away your advantage. It can be something simple like starting a conversation while you are shooting or having a "cooler" load up his chips in your landing zone. Watch out for the casinos that have a rubber underlay under the felt or layers of felt bunched up in the landing zone. These are conditions I've learned to look out for the hard way. I am giving you the opportunity to learn the easy way, from my mistakes.

To all you players out there with grand plans on beating the casino and getting rich in the process, take heed to my many mistakes and be sure to add knowledge, wisdom, and understanding to your repertoire. Beating this game is all about controlling yourself. As a wise man known as the Captain once said, "The contest is not between you and the casino; it is between you and yourself."

Until next time, tell 'em Jumbotron Ron sent ya.
