Casino Games Are a Microcosm For Life

24 November 1999

People seldom think about it, but the uncertainties we face at the gaming tables are a microcosm for the uncertainties of life. In every decision we make, we play the odds, calculating which course will bring the most gain.

No question about it: Life is a gamble. Every time we speed up at a yellow light, choose what to wear to a job interview, or make a move on the hot babe sitting in a bar, we're just rolling the dice. Is a cop going to see me? Is this the right tie to wear? Is she going to smile, or give me looks that could kill?

At the tables, the questions we ask are: Is this hot table for real? Is the next roulette number going to be red or black? What's the dealer's hole card?

People are always amazed at the weirdness that presents itself at the gaming tables, but they never make the connection that the same phenomena are constantly occurring in our everyday lives. Have you ever endured hours of mundane, repetitious, supercilious drivel on the radio, and then, suddenly! . . .you hear four of your favorite songs, back-to-back? That's the same kind of trend you see at the tables, when red wins twelve in a row at roulette, or some lucky shooter makes eight points.

Have you ever run an errand late at night, and all fifteen of the traffic lights you had to pass through were green? It's just like a cold craps table, where fifteen consecutive shooters can't make a single point.

Some days, everything goes right. You feel great, you're finally making headway on that project you've been killing yourself over for months; an old lover calls you up. Other days, you can't get a break. The world is conspiring against you, and they're winning. You cut yourself shaving, fall over a pair of rollerblades and the waitress gets your order wrong. Wins and losses.

It has been observed that the game of chess involves strategy not unlike that which is used in business, finance, and education. This is true, but casino games hit much more to the heart of things, because Money is at stake, and that's everybody's bottom line. It may hurt your ego to lose a chess game, but if you lose the big one at the tables, that will have a much more lasting impact on your life.

What's my point? Expect the unexpected at the tables, with every turn of the card, roll of the dice, and spin of the wheel. Around every corner in time lurks a new surprise, waiting to shock us and throw off our guard.

If you're waiting for it, you might be able to contain the damage!
