Casino City's Friday Five: A Few Firsts Edition

19 January 2018

In terms of gambling, it's been a good January. We've got one early casino opening, a couple of online gambling firsts and a triumphant million-dollar poker win.

What more could you ask for, other than winning your own million dollars?

5. Resorts World Catskills plans early opening
Resorts World Catskills is bumping up its opening date from 1 March to 8 February – prime time for guests to enjoy Lunar New Year celebrations.

Resorts World Catskills, about 90 miles north of New York City the largest casino in New York State, will feature over 2,000 slot machines, 150 table games, an 18-hole golf course and 332 luxury suites.

There's no mention of why this change has been implemented, so we can only assume that everyone's just really, really excited. The other three casinos in the region haven't been performing as well as one would hope, so it'll be interesting to see how this $1.2 billion property performs.

4. Evolution launches Live Texas Hold'em Bonus Poker

of its kind, featuring two juicy side bets in the form of a progressive jackpot and bonus bet. All Evolution games are streamed live from a casino in Riga and grant the player access to as authentic a casino experience as one can get without being physically present in one.

The "First Five" progressive jackpot triggers when a player lands a royal flush, and the Bonus Bet feature allows players to win up to 1,000x their starting hand. Obviously, there's a lot to like here.

The release of this game also marks the first time the company has introduced a game with a progressive jackpot on day one.

3. New Jersey online gambling set to grow in 2018
We'd say "we told you so" to all the naysayers, but at this juncture we're not sure who, exactly, could be doing any naysaying. (If it's you: we told you so!) New Jersey's online gambling industry has been doing so well for so long that it's difficult to imagine anyone could have guessed otherwise.

A report from NJOnlineCasinos tells us that 2017 brought in a record $245.6 million in annual gross revenue and a lifetime revenue of $722.4 million. About 90% of that annual revenue came from casino games. Poker, on the other hand, saw a decrease in revenue of about 8.5%.

2. PokerStars first to offer shared player pool in France, Spain
PokerStars has become the first to offer shared player liquidity between France and Spain. Poker buffs from the two countries can now go head-to-head for even bigger prizes and take part in even better promotions. To celebrate, the poker site is running a 5 million EUR guaranteed Hold'em series from 28 to 11 January.

The U.S. is considering something similar, floating a potential inter-state agreement between Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey. (And maybe Pennsylvania, depending on how things pan out.)

1. Maria Lampropulos grabs PCA Main Event win
As we here at Casino City are perpetually hoping more women will win poker games, we couldn't be happier with this news. Maria Lampropulos won the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event this week, taking home over $1 million and grabbing a Platinum Pass, which ensures entry into the $25K PokerStars Players Championship scheduled for next year.

This is Lampropulos' second million-plus win, following her victory at the PartyPoker MILLIONS last April.
